IEC

challange
Youth voter turnout in South Africa has historically been low, driven by limited electoral literacy, weak civic engagement, and a lack of early exposure to democratic participation. To address this, the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC), in partnership with the Department of Basic Education, needed an effective way to educate learners—particularly Grades 10–12—about their rights, responsibilities, and the importance of active citizenship, while ensuring the programme reached schools unable to physically attend flagship events.
solution
DigitalFWD delivered an integrated digital and multimedia activation to support the Schools Democracy Programme. This included live streaming of press conferences and mock elections to extend access, public WiFi with branded IEC advertising to enhance on-site engagement, and automated data collection through a CRM for feedback and post-event surveys. To reinforce key messages, DigitalFWD also deployed Multimedia Display Digital Table Talkers, creating consistent, aligned voter education touchpoints across participating venues.
results
The programme achieved broader reach and deeper engagement among learners by removing geographic and access barriers. Schools that could not attend in person were able to participate virtually, IEC messaging was consistently reinforced across digital and physical touchpoints, and valuable learner insights were captured through data-driven feedback mechanisms—supporting improved youth engagement, electoral awareness, and long-term civic participation. The programme delivered on electoral processes & civic responsibility.

DigitalFWD delivers integrated multimedia solutions for IEC Schools Democracy Programme.

As part of the Schools Democracy Programme, DigitalFWD delivered an integrated multimedia and connectivity solution that extended access to mock elections and voter education through live streaming, public WiFi, and digital displays. In addition to broadening reach to schools unable to attend in person, the initiative generated a structured database of participating learners and schools. This enabled the IEC and its partners to conduct post-event surveys and collect meaningful feedback on electoral literacy, civic awareness, and programme effectiveness. The data insights informed ongoing programme refinement and established a foundation for sustained engagement with learners as they transition into first-time voters, supporting long-term youth participation in South Africa’s democratic processes.
